Name a Rapper Nas Ain’t Influenced

Nas didn’t become one of hip-hop’s most influential figures by design. Though he claims to have known that his introductory verse on Main Source’s “Live At the Barbecue” would invent shock rap back in 1991, the Queensbridge lyricist’s moves have since come off as instinctive, rather than calculated. Nasty Nas’s seminal 1994 debut, Illmatic, alone, birthed several trends—from the cover art picturing a younger Nas to its effect on the landscape of hip-hop production. By the time he celebrated 10 years in the game on 2001′s Stillmatic, God’s Son was fully aware of his impact. “Name a rapper I ain’t influenced,” he rhymed on the first verse of “Ether”—his scathing response to Jay-Z’s “Takeover.” Indeed. Nas’s DNA can be found in an innumerable amount of MCs that have come out in the last 20 years. With Nas celebrating two decades in the game in XXL‘s November issue, XXLMag.com looks back at the “Nasty” MC’s contributions to the game and the MCs that followed.—XXL Staff

GREAT ARTICLE! MORE IMPORTANTLY, HE IS ONE THE MOST DOWN TO EARTH RAPPERS IN THE INDUSTRY AND LET’S NOT FORGET HE NEVER COMPROMISES HIS ART FOR COMMERCIAL SUCCESS. HE WILL ALWAYS BE RESPECTED AS A TRUE ARTIST.

  • anonymous

I agree with Tim a lot of his music is crap, if he’s not rapping with Mobb Deep I don’t care.

  • TicNitty706

    Nas is a GOAT.

But please stop this bullshit about he invented shock rap. That is very very disrespectful to artist like Esham, Geto Boys, & Ganksta NIP who were putting out shock rap before Nas debuted that verse.

  • Diz

Really, this article is reaching so much that it doesn’t even make sense. You’re given Nas way too much credit for these things!!

    • simon says…

  • Kevin Mueller

Honestly this is fucking reality right here. I love how if i told someone that Nas influenced eminem or was rapping with dre before him they’d laugh. He influenced the game so much without a doubt and besides Rakim he may be the most influential rapper of all time. Peace to his albums as well cause every single one is fire…Nastradamus aint even that bad and it gets hated on so hard. Nas is the greatest of all time no doubt.

  • Shamba Menelek

  • NAPTOWNNUISANCE

Best rapper alive is fuckin opinion not a fact. Though in my opinion I think he is top 10 not top 5 and not all time.

  • Dick B

There are plenty of rappers I’m sure haven’t been influenced by Nas, therefore this is dumb article. Nas’ music has never been about shock value, but for quality. Illmatic wasn’t that popular when it was released so I doubt it started a trend of rappers looking for big name producers on their albums. “I Gave You Power” didn’t popularize concept songs or albums, people were doing that before Nas like it’s said. R. Kelly on the hook? Does it matter that he popularized or started this trend? Really? I’m pretty sure The Firm didn’t make other rappers to start supergroups considering it failed to live up to expectations, plus the Juice Crew was the first hip hop supergroup.

    • bronxite

shut up dick, who told u illmatic was nt popular when it was releasedeverybody was talking about that album in ny when it came out. i gave you power influenced pac to write me and my girlfriend and other rappers followed suit.the juice crew never release an album together and it seems u too dumb to realize that this article is talking bout albums.

    • $yk

As soon as he typed that Illmatic wasn’t popular, I stopped reading. He couldn’t have been a part of the NYC rap scene or a Hip Hop fan at that time…no need to waste time here folks…

      • simon says…

If it was that popular how come it only sold about 50k on it’s first week?furthermore it took seven years to go platinum.Stop dickriding women lie,men lie numbers don’t.This is an article meant to assuage Nas’ ego and bring relevance to his dwindling career. And besides just because Nas did some things first in hiphop doesn’t mean other rappers who do the same later are influenced by him.Remember rappers can also be influenced by artists from other genres.F**k Nas and any dimwits who supports his music

  • Phizza phil

Nas is top 5…hs a legend…hs the king of NY…hs a true rapper for that matter…it aint nobodys fault that your ass aint got an ear for real rap…real music!
