Aside from working with Bieber, talk to me about your come up as a DJ.
Yeah, I’m from Baltimore and made my name as a DJ in the DMV area–D.C., Maryland and Virginia. I went to Hampton University and graduated in ’09. While at Hampton is when I started dropping all types of different mixtapes. I met J. Cole while I was in college before he really blew up. Me and him always been cool. Before he released The Warm Up mixtape, I was like, Let me drop a best of. It really took off and from there I started meeting different people. With Bieber, I met Bun B, who’s like a big homie right now. He’s really watched out, given me advice and helped me out with a mixtape. He didn’t have to do a mixtape with me. He doesn’t know me from anybody. Him allowing me to do a Best of Bun B with a legend in the hip-hop world was a big accomplishment for me. I met him in November. I told him I’m working on this Best of mixtape and would love to get some drops. I wanted to do it different than a regular mixtape with a DJ talking, screaming over the songs. I was like, For a Best of, I want to interview you, Bun. Let me ask you questions, but instead of hearing me ask questions, you just hear Bun B’s responses. He was down with it. We dropped it on New Year’s and it got picked up everywhere. Funkmaster Flex liked the mixtape. I’m happy it took off as it did. I’m working on The Best of Britney Spears right now to stay in my pop side too. If I can’t get in contact with her, I’ll just probably take clips from YouTube and come up with a story.
Lil Wayne recently told XXL about his hesitancy to collaborate with Bieber. Why should he collabo with the Biebz?
He should because Bieber is going to be around for a long time. He’s definitely an iconic artist and probably one of the biggest artists we’ll see in this generation. Wayne is the same in his own right as far as music right now, so it would be two superstars making music right now. Justin will be getting older and I think they’re clearly going to do a collaboration. I can’t wait to see that happen.
Is Bieber working on his next album now?
Yes he is. I wish I could talk about it more, but all I can say is it’s going to be one of the best things you’ve heard. It’s going to kill. There won’t be one person who says they don’t like the album.
Who would you like to see Bieber collabo with?
I’d love to see a Bieber-Busta Rhymes song. I’d love to see that. Definitely him and Drake, especially both of them being from Canada. That’d be dope. Eminem would be another person. Anybody who’s at the top of the rap game. He made a song with Kanye West. I would love to hear them work on something new together.
What do you have on deck?
Right now, I’m working on WeKnowTheDJ.com Season Four. It’s a blog series that I started that shows the cities I go to, what I do on my daily basis, a regular day for me. I’m also working on an artist of mine named Blake Kelly. He’s about to drop a mixtape real soon. Parties, whatever Bieber needs me to do [Laughs]. I’m just trying to be in the game.
