In 1990, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida ruled that 2 Live Crew’s third album, As Nasty As They Wanna Be, was legally obscene and it was momentarily taken off shelves. The verdict was later overturned by the Eleventh Circuit. The controversy helped push the album to a double platinum plaque. The record would be the last project released via Luke’s Skyywalker Records after a lawsuit filed by Star Wars director George Lucas forced the entrepreneur to change his label’s name to Luke Records. Luke’s controversial past continues to haunt him decades later. Earlier this year, Campbell was involved in a heated argument during his campaign to become Miami’s new mayor.
