XXL Honors 15-Year Anniversary of Tupac Shakur’s Death in Sept. Issue

XXL celebrates all things Tupac related in our forthcoming issue, hitting stands on August 16…

September 13, 2011 will mark the 15-year anniversary of Tupac Shakur’s death. XXL pays homage to the beloved, fallen rap legend in the mag’s forthcoming September issue, celebrating all things ’Pac.

For the special tribute issue, XXL Editor-In-Chief Vanessa Satten sat down with Tupac’s biological father, Bill Garland. Among the interesting and revealing topics discussed, Mr. Garland offered a heartfelt description of his son’s giving nature. “[Tupac] cared for people,” he said. “That was his main thing. He really cared for people. I think that’s why he would get so upset when people tried to question his commitment, his love for Black women or Black men. The East Coast/West Coast, you know, that’s a fabrication. I don’t have to begin to tell you that. So when that was questioned, it bothered him. Because he would give his heart or soul. He was a giving person. He would give anything to people. He would go in a store. [If there was a] Black man who couldn’t afford a $1,500 pair of boots, he would buy ’em for him. Think that Black man would ever forget Tupac? That’s just the way he is. But I don’t think that he did it for that. He did it because he had it, and he didn’t. That’s the way he is.”

In addition, XXL spoke with ’Pac’s ex-wife, Keisha Morris, who shared the intimate details of their relationship. “I knew Tupac,” she said. “No one can take that away. I really knew him, and he would never hurt me.”

XXL also talked to Tupac’s first manager and one-time roommate and mentor, Leila Steinberg, who gave insight into the special nature of her superstar client and their close relationship. There’s also an interview with Mutulu Shakur, ’Pac’s stepfather who helped raise the MC until the age of 11, who checks in from behind bars to celebrate ’Pac’s legacy.

XXL also spoke with ’Pac’s group, the Outlawz, dug into the tragic passing of one of the rapper’s favorite producers Johnny J. and investigated the real story behind his Quad studio shooting recently brought to light with the confession of ex-Jimmy Henchman associate, Dexter Issac, to the robbery and shooting of Tupac in 1994. And finally, 62 rappers remember ’Pac and speak on his impact and legacy. In addition XXL commissioned famed artist Tim O’Brien to paint an image of the  fallen hero, imagining him at 40-years-old.

Outside of the Tupac tribute, XXL reviews Game’s long-delayed, fourth solo LP, The R.E.D. Album, shares some of the jaw-dropping photos from Tech N9ne’s All 6s & 7s Tour and introduces Charlie Boy Gang and Chevy Woods in Show & Prove.

Be sure to pick up XXL’s September 2011 issue, hitting newststands nationwide on August 16. And don’t forget to check back with XXLMag.com, where XXL will be paying tribute to Tupac Shakur with exclusive content every day through September 13. —XXL Staff

When sales are slagging go to the [enter classic album/dead rapper] tribute issue. It’s like beating a dead horse. Yes, Tupac will go down as a legend but please stop shoving his dead dick down readers throats. I never found him to be THIS interesting. Great Artist – yes but I don’t give a fuck about his every waking moment. Give it a rest. To all his fans his loss was felt but to still whore out his fanbase is just wrong. There are real 2pac fans, fake 2pac fans who just say they like because everybody else does and then there are 2pac fanatics aka psychos who just for some reason think that buying everything 2pac is a reasonable idea but rarely understood the man. I know his face alone sales issues but have some integrity as a periodical and bring attention to the relevant issues of today and stop looking back to yesteryear.

      Bitch, shut da fuck up…

    • Pac Fan  | September 7, 2011 1:19 pm

I think you definitely have a point there, and I understand you are tired of seeing Tupac even after 15 years after his passing. Like you said, you were never THIS interested in him. No doubt, tastes differ. But I think we can both agree that it is important to commemorate and remember those who are not here anymore and had a big impact on the youth in a good way. The relevant issues today that you mention are so irrelevant that Tupac is more interesting, even 15 years after his death. What he had to say and what he wanted to do is unequaled by all the work the rappers nowadays do together. So speak your mind if you have something to say but don’t disrespect the real. Peace.

R.I.P. To Pac one of the best to ever do it, but yeah you run a issue with his face every couple of months. Let the man rest. And NO BIG WASNT BETTER. I know everyone on the east coast believes that but thats because that was Bigs home, the east. Big was top ten Pac top 5

    • Nick  | September 7, 2011 9:30 am

Just a little FYI for yall. That stereotype that everyone from the east coast thought Big was better is bullsh*t. Im personally from the east coast and I personally believe Pac was the best to ever touch a mic. From his lyrics to the way he came up and used everything to fuel him and never quit, to his devotion to people who had less than he and his great quotes on life, I believe the Don was the best to ever touch the charts actually. And as far as the whole faking his own death goes, for the love of everything holy I hope this shit is true, do I believe it? Ive done a good bit of research and you can call me crazy but I do think Makaveli is the 21st century Machiavelli. Only time will tell though. still have 3 years and some odd change left. If he does happen to comeback, that will surely be some of the biggest news of the century that a man of his status managed to stay hidden for 18 years. If not, legends never die so he will surely live on forever in our cd players, ipods, computers, clubs and most importantly hearts. If he doesnt come back and it all is truly over, let God be with you wherever you are R.I.P. Tupac and hope they are bangin Thug Mansion in Heaven

”PICTURE ME ROLLIN’ IN MY 500 BENZ….” SHIT,THIS FLOW KILLS ANYONE OUT NOW,PAC WAS A LEADER, LEGEND AND IS TOP 3,NO DOUBT.
