Planking aka the Lying Down Game first surfaced in England in 2009. The game requires people to lie like a board (hands aligned with the body) on random objects or vertically (without hands) and post pictures of the acts on various social networking sites. The game made news in September 2009 when seven doctors and nurses were suspended from Swindon, England's Great Western Hospital for planking on a helipad, trolleys and ward floors - while on duty.

Since then, the game has taken over Facebook, Twitter and personal blogging sites with thousands of photographs of people planking on statues, heavy duty machinery, boulders, and in toilets (vertically). But the general public aren’t the only ones fascinated by popping into handstands.

Over the past year, actors and athletes have taken to the awkward craze, but who would have thought planking would ever hit hip-hop?  Even XXL staffers have been planking. See pictures of hip-hop's latest plankers below.
