Jay Rock Speaks on Working on Dr. Dre’s Detox

Jay Rock had the Internet going nuts after he posted a picture of Dr. Dre giving him dap in the studio. The picture was snapped when Top Dawg MCs Jay Rock and Kendrick Lamar met with Doc to whip up some tracks for Detox. Speaking to XXLMag.com about the studio session, Rock says he was lucky to share airtime with one of the greatest hip-hop producers.

“Man, that dude right there is a legend,” Jay told XXL. “A million rappers would love to work with him. I’m just lucky to get the opportunity.”

Contrary to urban myth, Detox actually exists. Or so says one of the possible guest MCs on the eagerly awaited album. “It’s real, man,” claimed Jay Rock. “And from what I heard, I just gotta shake my head. The album is crazy.”

Now that he’s had a close look at Dre’s legendary work ethic, Jay Rock says he can confirm that Doc is a perfectionist. “Everything gotta be right,” said the 2010 XXL Freshman. “You gotta give him 112%. It can’t be 99% or 100%. It has to be more than that. There’s 2,000 pieces, but at the end of the day all the pieces come together. His mind is crazy.”

When he’s not busy cooking up tracks with Dre, Jay Rock can be found putting finishing touches on his debut album, Follow Me Home, for Tech N9ne’s Strange Music. He says the album is about 95% ready, but he’s still hoping to add one more piece to the puzzle: a beat from Dre. Other producers on board for the album include J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, L.E.S., Cool & Dre, Nottz, and DJ Quik.

Follow Me Home is due out May 17th. —Henry Adaso
