Game, Making Another Classic

It’s no secret that every since Game left Aftermath/G-Unit Records (both subsidiaries of Interscope) for Geffen in 2006, he hasn’t been able to achieve the same commercial success as his rookie year. His G-Unit-assisted debut, The Documentary, sold 586,000 units in its first week, was certified double platinum just two months after its release, and went on to sell over five million copies worldwide. His sophomore and junior efforts, Doctor’s Advocate (2006) and L.A.X. (2008), respectively, sold much less.

Some blame the highly publicized disputes with G-Unit general 50 Cent for tarnishing Game’s image. Others say it was the noticeably absent production from Dr. Dre. Either way, in 2010 things have changed and the Compton rapper has hit the reset button.

Getting back in his mentor’s good graces, Game has reunited with Dre to pull together his upcoming release, The R.E.D. Album, which will be executive produced by Pharrell Williams. XXLMag.com got with the West Coast MC to talk about trading bars with Jay Electronica, twitter beef with Jay Rock and getting back with Dre.

XXLMag.com: What’s going to be different about this album?

Game: Well, overall I just feel like it’s my best work to date. I’ve sold millions of albums; I don’t really have anything to prove to anybody or anything so I’m not looking for that. But I think people will listen to The R.E.D. Album and see all of what I put into it.

XXLMag.com: You have a lot of high profile guests lined up. Who were you most excited to work with?

Game: Justin Timberlake. The song I did with him is probably going to be a single. It was amazing to get a chance to work with him. Jay [Electronica] came through and did a verse at the spur of the moment. We missed getting Nicki [Minaj] on there. Things just didn’t come together for that. I wanted her on there, though.

XXLMag.com: How was it working with Dre and Pharrell in the studio together?

Game: It works well. I worked with Dre on a few songs and Pharrell is the executive producer of the project. He did the bulk of the tracks. Cool & Dre is on there, too. They did “Shake.” You’re gonna get [Swizz Beatz], The Hitboyz, and Timbaland, too.

XXLMag.com: How is it different working in the studio with Dre than Pharrell?

Game: You just work and work and work with Dre. You don’t even know what you’re working on. (Laughs) But he’s a perfectionist and I respect his work ethic. He’s a legend. With Pharrell we laid back, ordering pizzas, chillin’, completely different but we still get shit done because he’s a beast, too. With them having my back, I can’t go wrong.

XXLMag.com: How many songs did Dre produce on this album?

Game: I have no idea. I’m not sure which songs will be on [The R.E.D. Album] yet. We just worked on a gang of shit. Altogether there were like a thousand songs recorded for this album. A thousand! I got songs for days.

XXLMag.com: Yeah, like “400 Bars.” You went at a few people on there, too. What happened to having a drama free 2010?

Game: Aw man the shit I said on “400 Bars” about 50 and G-Unit ain’t even like dissin’ to me. That’s nothing. That just is what it is. People too serious and uptight. Those were just jokes. It’s ongoing with them, though.

XXLMag.com: But didn’t you have Twitter beef with Alchemist and Jay Rock, too?

Game: People just hyping shit up. [Al] know what it is though and with Jay Rock, to be honest, I didn’t even know that that was Jay Rock that had even said the Cube thing. So when I said what I said on the track I wasn’t thinking about him specifically.

XXLMag.com: What do you think about what Cube was saying like, basically that it’s not his responsibility to put anyone on?

Game: I mean, do you think it’s his responsibility? Because I don’t think so. People have to pay their dues. I paid my dues and they gotta do the same. —Brooklyne Gipson

Say what you want about Game but he can flow for real . Just because his 2 albums without Dre and 50 did not sell like his first does’nt mean they were wack . Just under appreciated . I am mos def checking for the Red album .

    • LEO

yeah…but I’m mad this nigga just said that he paid his dues like nobody put him on lol we all know that’s Bull Shit…The Red Album aint gonna be a classic…it’s just gonna be a good album like his other joints…

  • yoI moma

    • Thug

Dont try and start that first shit on hear
like in world star hip hop you fuckin faggot.
By the way your not even firt bitch.

Game was very well respected by me due to the fact that he stood alone as a man when the other G-Unit cats were clearly maintaining beefs based on their boss’s affiliation. But as time went on I noticed how he made some very stupid mistakes. His intellect is clearly not as top-notched as I thought it was. For example…. The interviewer here clearly pointed out some glaring inconsistencies and contradictions in his positioning (drama-free 2010 and 400 bars). Also he shoots at people without thinking (50 and G-unit deserved it, not so sure about Jay-Z and Alchemist). The clearer picture to me is that if you are willing to dick-ride on one dude (Dr. Dre) and stand as a man in another situation (50 cent), you need to explain your position. Don’t be wishy-washy. Get over the beef (400 bars) and do you. Because it is looking more and more to me like you like using the 50 beef to sell records, just as 50 likes using the beef to sell his records. Stop being inconsistent and do you. THE REAL YOU.

    • awesome arsenal

there is no real him, this dude is fake as hell and thoroughly unenjoyable to listen to. you do realize if you remove his city and colors he’s a butterfly right?

  • DJ NITTI

Just one question, WTF is it that Dr.Dre works on? I always hear about his work ethic and the fact that he’s always working but on what? Does he have a mental problem or something? So much work and no output? He works just for the sake of working? What’s the point? I don’t get it!

    • KLETEWOOD

      Dre works hard on not-flopping.

He don’t put out much…but, at least he sells a meal ticket on every album he produces.

Out of a thousand songs….this nigga better have atleast one hit. Shake was cool…but, its not a classic by any means.

    • yung h

lol thats almost tru though if he dont put out detox by the end of the year hes gonna b irrelevant

HEY GAME,YOU EVER HEARD OF USING DJ QUIK YOU FUCKO

    • kedordu

I HOPE NO ONE SHOOTS ME FOR SAYING THIS BUT QUIK HASNT REALLY DONE ANYTHING THAT IS OF HIS STANDARD IN 3 YRS . IM NOT LYING U KNOW IT . THAT BLAQOUT CD SHOULDA BEEN MUCH HOTTER THAN IT WAS . QUIK IS MY FAV PRODUCER OF ALL TIME BUT AMG PRODUCED THE FIXXERS AND THAT WAS WAY HOTTER THAN THE BLAQOUT ALBUM . AND I HOPE HE READS THIS . WHERE BOMB BUD 3 , WHERES THE ALBUM WITH EL DEBARGE , RHYTHMALISM 2 . AND WHY ARENT U PRODUCING MUSIC LIKE UR SONS THE JUSTICE LEAGUE , 1500 OR NOTHING .. OH WELL (ZONES OUT TO TRAUMA IN HIS DRE BEATS )

  • og bobby j

title reads “game working on an other classic”…..does anyone remember his first “classic” i dont. The documentary was good, mainly because of the production.

i would rather hear 16 solid bars, than 400 from any rapper. Game is ok at best. He plays his part, but all the dickridign and name dropping is not my style.

It amazes me that drer will work with this dude, and suppossedly has ths incredible work ethic, but couldnt put the time in to produce a hot album for my man Joell Ortiz?

    oh well…

I voted hell nah! But I wanna hear something hard. I hope he delivers.

  • rbiz

why r all the hip hop media rags so focused on how much an artist sells all the damn time? we know that virtually noone sells like they used to. cats need to stop referencing dropping sales, cause EVERYBODY’S sales have dropped. talk about relevant shit like talent.

  • Jack Bill

wonder why Dre didn’t exec produce this album? after all the hype….hope Dre has more than 3 beats on the album. Hope this doesnt turn into the Pharell album after that ‘Aint No Doubt About It’ b*llsh*t!!

  • http://j-mace.deviantart.com Shawty J

As much as I’d like to see Game release a classic, I don’t see the RED Album being that classic. The songs leaked thus far have done nothing for me, and the fact that Pharrell is producing the bulk of the album makes me more weary as he’s been hit or miss for the past few years. If he’s giving Game the same type of beats he’s been given Clipse it might be all good though.

  • http://XXLmag Shacooz

    fuck thiz fag,fake ass nigga

  • Da Illest

Its funny how 50 disses every rapper but Game disses him all the damn time and 50 doesnt say shit. LOL. Fuck what ya’ll heard, Game is the best rapper in the game. I’m copping that joint for real.

  • q461

Real talk I consider The Documentary to be like a tier below classic, it’s close but not there. A classic is like ready to die, illmatic, reasonable doubt etc.. just sayin..

I like game but yeah he’s too wishy washy for heads to take seriously…keeps you guessing but its too much….how many times he diss 50 then offer to peace things up? its a shame too, cause like it or not, game can spit heat

  • AZ40

I think he relies too heavily on the big name producers rather than his actual lyrical and song writing ability

  • magnetic

Co-sign Anonymous. Two Bloods from Compton, not sure why Quik and Game don’t make music together. That being said Game gotta be one of the illest right now. 50 sent some shots at Game on “BISD” so its only right that Game go back at G-Unit. As much as I love and support Game, I’m not feeling him doing songs with Timberlake. I guess for sales it makes sense and I’m sure thats what he’s doing, but fuck that sellout shit, I think it totally goes against what he reps.

  • Fireforreal

I agree he needs to stop talking about what producers did what and how many tracks because that makes the fans think he doesn’t have any heat outside of the beats maybe and bullshit features. Some times less is more so instead of him having 16,17,18 tracks i would rather hear him do a solid 12-14 with maybe a track or two with REAL singer and just spit fire like when he first came out. Stop saying every fucking album was a classic. The first album was almost a classic minus a few songs that were filler than the next had less bangers and LAX was just too much. He was trying to hard.Get back to being one of the only Cali niggas Eastcoast cat’s checked for.

  • Kenny D

I will always consider the Documentary a classic. It’s not one of the best albums of all time (Ready to Die, Reasonable Doubt, Chronic, Marshall Mathis LP, Illmatic, etc.), but its a classic in my books. The question is a lot of people have high standards for an album to be a classic. I just consider an album to be a classic if it’s memorable. As for R.E.D. Ablum, I think it will go hard, but I don’t think it will be a classic. Unless he’s got a few songs with Dre that just blows everyone away, it may just be another Doctor’s Advocate and LAX (a few good songs, a few alright songs, a few shitty songs).

  • Hussle’s Way

A Classic? ARE YOU FUCKIN KIDDIN ME???

did yall hear the songs that leaked??

SHAKE? — mixtape shit. wack! doesnt rhymes
IT MUST BE ME? — are you serious? beat is weak
JT COLLABO? — LOL it’s really garbage

    Game fell the fuck off

    • drox

      co-sign Hussle’s Way
Anyone out there that’s isnt biased with the game’s stance without any problems can really tell the leaked tracks aren’t even close to being dope. I was actually looking for a west revival here but just like Malice in Wonderland I bet you RED will be just another album on the shelf not bumpin rides…

  • jburg

ANOTHER CLASSIC? Where is the first one? The Documentary was a 50 album. You can tell by the writing. And on all the features Game got out shined. It was a good CD but not because of Game. He was actually the weak link.

  • Anonymous

Co-sign Anonymous and Magnetic. I think Quik is a dope ass producer. Pharrell is a bitch, and, personally, I think his shit is garbage. Can’t stand his production, and or his singing/rapping. That’s just my opinion.

  • Lacee

Totally off the subject, does anyone remember the EA Sports Rap Battle hosted on here? I was so into it at first, thought I’d see a Shells vs Eyedea type outcome, but as the battles went on, it became more humorous than anything. They kept pushing forward the loser into the next round till it was 90% conceivable that the winner was preplanned from the beginning, which turned out to be a guy named Sanatra I believe? He wore a lot of hats and said the word baby at the end of everything which was hilariously mocked by Clifton Fermi. That’s my real question, does anyone know what happened to him, cause I never laughed so hard by someone posting comments in forums in my life. Each round he’d lyrically destroy each rapper that won, none of them would battle him back, they’d just get salty and tell him he was a jerk and stuff lol. I want another free style battle hosted, XXL needs to put up some goods, free subscriptions, shirts, cds, dvds, or whatever and host a new round of battlers with actual talent this time.
