Eminem, Whiteout

[Editor’s Note: These are the outtakes to the edited White Noise article that appears in the June 2009 issue of XXL. In the outtakes, Alchemist, MC Serch, Ill Bill, Paul Wall and RA the Rugged Man discuss if Eminem is not considered the best MC of all time because he's white.]

Alchemist
Truth be told, Em was very close, there were talks of him maybe doing a deal with Duck Down. So it’s like imagine he had gone that route. He would have dropped some crazy dope stuff, but the lane that he got in. You could say the same thing about 50, getting in that camp with Interscope and Aftermath, that lane with Dr. Dre, man it was a blessing and then what he did with it. He did [the] right records like “Stan.” He just didn’t get in that lane and eat off that plate he brought stuff to it so he did it the right way. Like no one else ever did it.

Bubba Sparxxx
I have a different take on that because I was on the same label as Em. My first two albums were on Interscope. I kinda felt to a degree we did co-exist there for a while. Granted, I never achieved success on the level that he had but I can honestly say that inside that building I felt like I was given every opportunity to succeed and like when “Ugly” came out that was an undeniable moment in hip-hop history it did just happen to fall in between Eminem albums. It was definitely during what could be called his reign I guess. And Haystak was doing his thing during that period and then Paul [Wall] came a little later. I see cats out here eating and succeeding just because me or whoever else don’t achieve success on the level that Em had I can’t really complain. I just gotta get it up. He’s an icon and he was the first. I don’t just reference him as a white rapper, I reference [him] as an all-time great period.

Ill Bill
People have said that about Em. Google it. why not? I think Eminem is dope. Dude don’t have to prove nothing to nobody he’s done did it. He rhymes neck and neck with right next to the greats. Listen to “Renegade,” homie held his own and people say he killed Jay on that track.

MC Serch
He can definitely be No. 1. It depends on the longevity of his career. here’s the thing, did Eminem have a greater impact than Rakim for his era? Did Em have a greater impact than Biggie for his era? Did he change the way people rhyme, did the music and constructed their beats? To me to be the greatest of all time doesn’t just mean to have an incredible flow cause if that was the case Pharoahe Monch would be the greatest MC of all time. Andre 3000 would be… it’s not just about lyrics, content and flow. It’s about your impact on popular culture and how records are made. I think he’s in the top 10 for sure because he impacted how people perceived music.

Paul Wall
I think I’m pretty good, I’ve had a hell of a career and I’m gonna continue to grow and I hope to be the best that I could be. But there’s so many artists that’s out here that I just feel like I could be the best of all-time. I could be one of the best but that’s a helluva tag to have. I think he’s one of the best to touch the mic. And whoever the best is I don’t feel like whether they’re Black, White, Hispanic that’s not gonna be the reason they the best. That’s just gonna be the pick of the draw. They could be from any country, they could be from any city, they could have any style, they could look any kinda way, they could be fat or skinny, they could be short, they could have a grill in they mouth, they could be any race.

RA the Rugged Man
It’s racist having Eminem as the greatest rapper of all time. That’s like the Last Samurai with Tom Cruise. All the Asians die and Tom Cruise survives walking through the body pile at the end. That’s racist. As good as a MC Eminem is, putting [him] #1 of all time is not even a legitimate argument. I don’t wanna hate on the kid. He’s good at what he does but he’ll tell you that himself. It’s racist. So the whole history of rap goes into who sold the most records or something? It’s a corporate thing. Maybe it’s not racist and just corporate. Corporate America did make him the most successful of all time, or one of them. There’s some sort of race thing behind that. Everybody goes back to the same argument was Elvis the king of rock, obviously there’s race attached to why you would name Eminem the greatest rapper of all time when Eminem will tell you can’t handle to Kool G Rap historically. A man that was great from 1986 to 2009. That’s corporate. Maybe not as much racist, but it’s corporate and it’s industry. I watched Yo MTV raps in 94-95 and they had top rap entertainers or something like that and they had Puffy at No. 1 because he was hot at the moment. It’s corporations brainwashing the people and not giving a fuck about reality. I don’t wanna be one of these White boy rappers that goes and disses Em. Like Em ain’t shit cause I’m not that. I know a lot of White boy wanna be like, “oh, I’m the white boy. I don’t give a fuck about White or Black, I’m the least racist fuck on the planet.” If you’re White and you’re best of all time or you’re Black and you’re the best of all time, I want you to get the title. So I’m not going there….

  • stoneyisland

First of all how the fuck did XXL not have Joe Scudda on the panel………….that said I think the dopest white MC of all time said it best (Serch) “here’s the thing, did Eminem have a greater impact than Rakim for his era? Did Em have a greater impact than Biggie for his era? Did he change the way people rhyme, did the music and constructed their beats? To me to be the greatest of all time doesn’t just mean to have an incredible flow cause if that was the case Pharoahe Monch would be the greatest MC of all time. • Verdas

Scudda actually uses the word “Nigga”….
      Karma managed his career.

      • TheYesMan

In what song did Scudda say that in???

ALL THAT FUNNY RAP SHIT HE TALK ABOUT ONLY GOES SO FAR..TALK ABOUT THE STREETS OR FUCKIN BITCHES OR RUNNIN FROM POLICE..ALL THAT DRUG OVERDOSING AND I HATE MY MOM SHIT IS FOR WHITE FOLKS MAKE ME RELATE AS A BLACK MALE!!!!!

    • Chris S

we are talking about the greatest RAPPER of all time. in my opinion, someone’s impact on popular culture should not be taken into account. that would be a list for MOST INFLUENTIAL of all time (which Em might or might not still be at the top of)

and as far as rapping goes, nobody could do everything like slim could. flow, lyrics, rhymes, punchlines, wordplay, humor, storytelling, substance, relevance, delivery, etc.
maybe a few poeple could top him in a single category but they don’t have the entire package.

he also rhymed the word “orange”….

      • DETROIT

eminem makes what i call “soul-less music”. his delivery is actually below average. HE IS A GREAT MC, but people take it too far. E-40, BUSTA RHYMES, TOO SHORT, etc, kill em in the delivery category! he raps off beat most of the time, the only song where he attempts to actually ride the beat is “superman”. what’s funny is people luv em so much that they say that he’s the best as shit he isn’t even good at. wanna know why people like gucci mane….DELIVERY! his lyrics are shit, but his delivery is above average! also, there isn’t much substance in em songs, not compared to the likes of nas, wu-tang, outkast, etc. AGAIN, EM IS GREAT, BUT LET’S NOT TAKE IT TO FAR. lyrics, rhymes, punchlines, humor, storytelling, and relevance ARE definately some of em’s strong points….but like i said, his flow/delivery is garbage!

        • yoprince

          lol i feel you detroit!

i wouldn’t go so far as saying his flow/delivery is “garbage,” but i get your point..

it’s the same thing with that nigga budden.. thinkin he’s better than everyone just because his bars are nice.. no nigga! there are other factors in RAPPING.. and you missing ALOT of them.

and i don’t care what anybody says.. Jay spazzed out on the second verse on Renegade.. both lyrically and with substance..

        • chillin mayne

          hell yea…jay wrecked…MURDERED dat renegade track….
mutha fuckas, say dat im foolish, i only talk about jewels, / do u fools, lisin to music or do u just skim throo it? / see im influ-enced, by the ghetto u ruined / da same dude u gave nothin, i made sumthin doin…WOOOOOOO.. dat nigga WRECKED dat shit…i always felt jays bars more dan i did eminems on dat track..real talk…
I DROVE PAST THE FORK IN THE ROAD AND I WENT STRAIT!!

      • Eon

Styles P also rhymed the word orange…whats your point? (c) that akon “Locked up” remx

    • Jvizzle

Eminem is def the best white rapper of all time no contest… The best rapper ever is Tupac, too bad he died way too early cuz he would still be topping the charts right now. His beats, flows and lyrics were way ahead of his time, you can take one of his songs and release it today and you wouldnt even know that it was 15 years old. Em and Tupac would have collaborated on some of the best rap/hip hop music ever made.

    • J Nizzle

Early sales estimates predict Eminem’s Relapse will capture his fifth consecutive Number One on the charts next week with an astounding — for this economy, anyway — 650,000 copies sold. Even if Relapse merely surpasses 600K, the album will easily be the bestselling for a debuting album this year, and the highest sales week since AC/DC moved 784,000 copies of Black Ice in October 2008, Billboard.biz reports.

Of Em’s six officially released albums (we’re not counting the unearthed Infinite) only his debut album The Slim Shady LP failed to reach the top spot, settling for Number Two in 1999. But his five consequent albums all reached Number One, a feat that Marshall Mathers will likely accomplish for a sixth consecutive time when his Relapse 2 is released later this year. Additionally, Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits and the 8 Mile soundtrack also reached Number One.

Even though Relapse’s expected sales numbers are impressive, they don’t come close to the 711,000 copies 2004’s Encore sold in a truncated sales week after the release date was pushed up four days to combat that album’s leak. Relapse also isn’t within the same ballpark of the 1.76 million copies The Marshall Mathers LP sold in the pre-leak/pre-recession days of May 2000. According to Billboard.biz, Em’s last five albums alone have combined for roughly 33.3 million in sales just in the United States, making the rapper the bestselling artist in hip-hop.

I agree with Paul Wall. Who’s the best is in the ear of the listener.Ice Cube means something different to Chicago than G-Rap. G-Rap means something diffrent to Kenosha, WI than Eminem so it depends on who you ask.

    • Around and Around

Paul Wall made no fuckin sense…figures somebody from Kenosha fuckin WI would say some shit like that.

Another GOAT argument that’ll never be resolved. And what does race have to do with it? How successful is Asher Roth and his promotion team?

  • http://www.sylermusic.com Syler

I dunno how you can choose a GOAT, as MC’s evolve based upong the growth and influence of those who came before them. Also, I truly believe race has nothing do with it, but in regards to Ill Bill’s statement, Em did destroy Renegade, not to mention produced the joint as well. Not that Jay’s verses were weak, Em’s were just unbelievable. That first verse on Renegade is one of my favorite 16′s of all time.

    • http://www.sylermusic.com Syler

Atleast I think it was 16, him and Jay had back to back 16′s on both verses right? Either way, “now who’s the king of these rude, ludicrous, lucrative lyrics?/who could inherit the title, put the youth in hysterics?”. Dope.

WHO THE FUCK IS RA THE RUGGED MAN??? ITS RACIST? THAT IS UTTERLY RETARDED! MC SEARCH HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD. EMINEM CHANGED THE HIP HOP FOREVER WHEN HE DROPPED. THE SLIM SHADY LP WAS IN LIKE 98 OR 99 I WAS LIKE IN 8TH GRADE. AROUND THAT TIME CASH MONEY AND NO LIMIT HAD IT ON LOCK IN THE SOUTH AND THATS WHEN DEF JAM WAS RUNNIN NEW YORK WIT JAY-Z AND DMX BOTH SELLIN AT LEAST A MILLION COPIES EVERY GO’ROUND……THEN A WHITE DUDE FROM DETROIT WITTA DRE BEAT CAME AND THE REST IS HISTORY. IM NOT PAYLAKIN CUZ IM WHITE IM JUS SAYIN EVERY SONG HE’S DONE WITH ONE OF THE G.O.A.T HE HAS SLAUGHTERED EM’…NO DISRESPECT JUS TRUTH…

    P.S.
    TO RA THE RUGGED MAN;
    DUDE…GO THAT WAY————->DUMBASS

    • DETROIT

what songs has em done with the greats?

as far as renegade, to me that’s a perfect argument as to why em is not the goat! everyone says he murdered jay, basically because nas said it in a DIS SONG (the same song where he goes on to say beans is better than jig), and because of how he rapped all fast and shit. to a hustler, jay came off at least as hard as em…”had to hustle, my back to the wall, ashy knuckles, Pockets filled with a lot of lint, not a cent,
      Gotta vent……”.
the reason white boys luv em so much is because he’s the first rapper that they can fully understand/relate to!

RA was right, em is the black elvis….VERY TALENTED, but there are alot of black mc’s with just as much talent who get no shine. eminem is not original, the genre of music he does is called “horror core”, similar to brother lynch hung and the gravediggaz!

also, renegade was an em song, on an em beat, prior to adding jay. originally it was em and royce! matter of fact, royce is damn near as nice as em, and he’s not even in anyone’s top 50!

I THINK YOU MISUNDERSTOOD SEARCH, USING HIS CRITERIA, SNOOP DOG> EMINEM! he definately had a larger inpact on the game as a whole than em. WHAT ABOUT BUSTA RHYMES, REDMAN, ETC?

      • Superstar Extraordinaire

DOG, GOOD BLACK MCS GET NO SHINE CUZ LOOK WAT THE LIL BLACK KIDS LISTENING TO…..SB……EM HAS ALL THE WHITE KIDS AND THE PEOPLE WHO LIKE THE REAL HIP HOP

      • Detroit Draper

Beans is better. Maybe not in a commercial sense. I think when Nas said that he really meant it. Not just to have something bad to say because of the beefing.

  • Crispy

R.A. is the only one up there with any right to talk about hip hop. Even Serch should really shut his mouth on issues of the culture.

RA the rugged man? what a racist fuck, if a black man knocked down the doors of the grand ole opry and ruled country music, could no one make a claim that he was the best due to him participating in a traditionally white institution. fuck that noise dude is as ignorant as i have ever heard.

    • #2

      CO-FUCKIN-SIGN!!!!

  • http://xxlmag jb

I actually agree with R.A. somewhat. lol. I dont think him being white has anything to do with cats not calling him the G.O.A.T. He simply NOT the G.O.A.T! Not at all! Now if u wanna put him in ur top 5 or 10 fine. But if you wanna call him the G.O.A.T. I wanna know y. and it better be some good ass points. I’m not even gonna get in2 the discussion of if he was black cuz he said he wouldnt have the same impact. KRS still gets my vote.
    http://www.myspace.com/lidujay

  • momo

yeah he killed jay on renegade but at the same time royce da 5 9 held his own with em on the original version..plus em has evolved to the rapper he became…g rap/rakim came out top 5 arguably…let’s ask this question again 10 years from now…you still see pac/big influences and we are going on 12/13 years since their deaths..

  • ms

man, eminem the best to ever do it…dont nobody else got the combination of flow, cadence, wordplay, multi syllabic rhymes, emotion, story telling and creativity this man got…no rapper want it with em, lets be real now

first off Hip-hop fans are as dumb as a sack of rocks(yes I mean crack). Because there is no such thing as a greatest of all time at something that is still a viable living movement in any form. You can look back at disco and say this guy ruled disco on every level because that brand of music disappeared in its original form only passing on elements to the rave scene. So you can analyze the whole movment to a degree.

Secondly, Em is a dope lyricist but what did he do besides validate the idea of white rappers in mainstream and popularize acid rap to the mainstream (Esham being the creator who is also from detriot)? Em represented his segment of the population great but he did not change the game. His rhyme patterns are complex but so are many rapping ass rappers. What overall effect he had on the culture besides being one of the most well known to do this in his race? He did not invent nor reinvent the wheel he only manufactured a solid product based on the structure provided for him. So in the context of history EM deserves mad props but all this G.O.A.T talk is retarded and out of context. What about Big Pun is he not considered for G.O.A.T status becuase he died too soon, was his bars not complex. I think Em would not have been where he is today if Dre hadn’t used his godlike clout at the time to give him the platform and the cosign. Look at all the dope white, hispanic, black and Asian rappers who spit that complex ish not getting the same love or even being entertained as dope.

Also Juice and Rhymefest beat him at scribble Jams and they haven’t gotten the same nod nor has Dos ONE a white rapper who came close to knocking him off but the crowd roled with EM cause Dos was tooo left field.

    • DETROIT

i always said that eminem was a cross between redman and esham. but as far as Detroit rap goes, SHAM IS THE MAN, HE PUT US ON! he also has some non-acid cds (1987 and Dead Flowers) that are da shit!

      • tru predator

if i recall mc breed was the first known rapper to come out of detroit.

  • Nate

The “best of all time” arguments can be endless. But it is safe to say (so far) you can never go wrong throwing him in the “Top 5 Dead or Alive” pile. Get the new album, add it to his catalogue, and it gets harder and harder to argue Em isn’t top 5. In 6 months Relapse 2 will continue to twist the knife into arguments negating Em Top 5.

    • http://avengerxl.blogspot.com/ Avenger XL

Sorry Nate that depends on who’s top five i.e. it is too subjective to call. No matter how complex Em’s flow is if his lyrics are vile to me or he shit doesn’t speak to me then it doesn’t make my top 5. So all lists are pretty much worthless hypothetical arguments in which folks just want to big up there thoughts over the next mans. Em is dope bottomline leave it there and support him if you feeling it or leave it alone if you don’t. All this stupid lists are counter productive now as I said if hip-hop all but disappeared then you can go back and say these guys were great for various reason and Em belongs in the rapping ass rapper category or wordsmiths.

Eminem is a “Acid Rapper,” meaning he needs to take that devilish(demonic) shiit to rock-n-roll, aint no space for that in hip hop.

You are correct in your statement that none of these guys are the greatest of all time they have had great effects on their particular sport or profession. I am suprised that you came to this conclusion since you are obviously a typically mindless poster around here. The whole greatest of all time thing is a marketing tool and a hypothetical argument and nothing more.

In order to be called the greatest, I think your music has to be timeless. To me, Pac, Big, Scarface, Outkast, UGK (Ridin Dirty). I’m sure I am leaving out a few more people, but when I listen to their past work in 2009, It’s still bangin. That means you are great to me. Rank them if you like, but the rankings will be different with every person.

    • LB

That’s a good man. You should be able to turn on the music and not be able distinguish between the past and present because of the timelessness, unless they give references to certain shit that’s happenin at the time.

  • Markus Dice

How can a sane person put em as the greatest rapper of all time? He is real good, one of the best of he’s generation but goat hell no… Rappers like ice cube who been putting out records for 20 years and still drop records that go gold that’s a real Goat.

  • Emperor Doom

It’s not racist that Eminem isn’t the GOAT because he’s white. He’s simply not the GOAT. Biggie is…come on now everyone knows that. That being said Eminem is still one of the best rappers of all time.

Sales does not equal skill or greatness. People bought a lot of backstreet boys albums and Nsync albums and they sucked in ways that could make superhead say daaaaaaammmmn. Art and creativity is not weighed on a number scale. Some of the greatests writers and artists were not recognized until they were dead in literature. Since Hip-hop is on the low end of the art spectrum in its current forms it is hard to see it as true art but it envolves the creative process so that is how it has to be judged. Now if you want to say who is the greatest selling artists of all time that is easily measured.

XXlLare on some real white boy dicks i.e eminem and asher roth, i bough relapse, listened 2 a few tracks and then shelved it, that shit ain’t getting another listen again. very average album like his last 3, funny thing is em has a huge margin for error, nas makes 1 bad album and people r saying he fell off, and invites an attack from jay-z ,eminem makes 3 and he is still being heralded as top 5 dead or alive? Funny how people mention his line on renegade as prove that he is the greatest? How you work that out, sigel has murderd jay on countless tracks, heck Az had a better verse than nas on lifes a bitch, so before you call eminem a dope lyricist, with great contnent and subject matter, has anyone heard of pharoah monch, rass kass, mos def, big pun, scarface, andre 3000,GZA,and bare in mind i haven’t even begun to name nas and co.

    • ntee

what the fuck dude you have no say in the relapse album because you havent even listened to it!! you said it yourself!! you are a fucking idiot. go suck a dick you piece of shit

  • Avenger XL

Also the irony of XXL choosing to shoot Em in clown make up like the joker. when it is the primary gimmick of acid rap mainstays Twisted and even insane clown posse (who are no where near EM lyrically) is tooo wild.

  • yaOK

j.ezy you’re a fucking moron. Relapse is a classic, you just aren’t paying attention. LISTEN to what the dude is actually saying, how he is putting words together it is fucking genius. Dumb Ass, Doesn’t bother me that you don’t like it though you are just fucking retarded. Now the people who can see what this album really is who are really paying attention can enjoy the hell out of it. Now move along bitch go hate somewhere else.

    BUY RELAPSE.

i dont beleive any race has a super genetic abilty to rhyme words. a skin color doesn’t come with a speciffic talent. that being said when a genra of music such as hip hop that has an image which it is mostly confined to (young urban african american males) opens its doors to a bigger world, it becomes clear that talent exists elsewhere. the population of the world that fits the “hip hop image” is probubly less than 10 million. there is something like 6 billion people in the world. as soon as hip hop opens its doors to the rest of the world very few of these g.o.a.t.s will sound as remarkable as they do now. its a shame that it is 2009 and we are still having these sorts of coversations.

  • patkilpat

I co-sign ALC and Serch. Royce is a better emcee than Em (that says a lot), Em has decent songs and a huge market he can fill better than others because of his race, they except it easier. His first album was strait but he lost it after that.

The dopest usually aren’t the best selling artist..

Oh and his production… I can count his top beats on my middle finger.

finally someone talking some sense em is cool but after his second album. i could not fuck with him no more. his music was going in a direction i did not care about. songs saying the same shit he been saying for the last 2 albums. i don’t agree with you saying that em had it easier because of his race he actually had it harder. any other artist could say anything and it was cool but people were trying to sue em for saying faggot and things like that.

    • tru predator

royce better.man your smokin.you obviously stopped listening after the first album because his music and producing got better and better.up until encore.the re-up was o.k (which was in the same time frame as encore,so go figure.)this was when things started to go downhill.you could tell he was burnin out.he’s back it sounds pretty damn good.way better than encore and reup.not his best but still damn good.so according to my count and many others he had a total of two bad albums.out of 6.not to mention all the d12(shit was banannas, and guest spots and guest production).not only is one of the best all time,he isnt such a bad producer either.

  • Smooth-Operator

Damnnn Eminem surely has the BUZZZ going, he is spinning everyone around his finger.

He is great, thats sure. U cant put him #1 cuz there aint no number 1. Everybody has their own style and their own opinion.

The only person up there with some sense is Ra and I am shocked that Serch, for 1)money was at the hospital with Krs-one and the whole bronx when Scott La Rock expired 2) show that white kids could flow (3rd Base-less clownish than Beastie Boys)3) he was instrumental in the coming of Nas–of all people would say some dumb shit like that. There are thousand of motherfuckers out there better than the new elvis– Buckshot, Q-tip,Andre 3000, GZA, Ghost, etc… Emlvis has changed the game in one way only he came out with a white man’s perspective or angst whatever–what has Emlvis done ? sold records? good, Vanilla Ice dit it well one song. next, what he’s funny? witty? good and Biz wasn’t funny? Jay ain’t witty?. This is another way of trying to misappropriate something which is not yours. Oh yeah, if he wasn’t white we wouldn’t be having this discussion because he’d be just an average non-white mc-no wait-non-white rapper.

I got the Relapse album and it nothing great. It’s just another Eminem cd.Don’t get me wrong, Em can flow but I can’t listen to whole Eminem album. In Eminem is in my top 20 (#16).He hasn’t change hip hop. He’s a white rapper who got the right co-sign he needed from Dre.In my opinion Em can’t touch a rapper like Busta Rhymes.Truth be told Em would have a hard time with Royce Da 5’9”at htis point.Royce was getting better when Eminem was at his peak.Avenger XL was on the money with his comments.

  • Shadoe90

Eminem being G.O.A.T.? The first rapper/emcee in hip hop to be claimed g.o.a.t. was LL Cool J back in 80′s and now no one realy put’s him in top 10. Ain’t sayin’ he’s g.o.at. but at his err he was, just like biggie was in mid 90′s as well as ice cube was in early 90′s than jay-z in late 90′s and Eminem is the g.o.a.t of the 20th century for his err and he’s got a for sure ticket in top 5, TOP 5!!!!!!!!!!!!! wut emcee/rapper wouldn’t take it. Em’s know cuz he said if he was black he wouldn’t have sold but half.
My opinion, i think Big Pun could be the best emcee, or biggie as most would say. No disrespect but i’ve heard other’s better than biggie. His flow is none better but artist’s like jay-z, Jin, cassidy, royce obie trice have just as much to offer on mic wise. But u gotta remember that for any emcee to go from rag’s-2-riche’s is sum thin’ beyound. From my point em did it bigger when it come’s to classic battle rap cuz that’s how he earned his stripe and that’s how he got signed and how he was discovered. Now look at me “Greatest Rapper Alive”. But i dont think he’s g.o.a.t.

  • j.ezy

Stan!! No need to insult me i don’t know you, you don’t know me, your not gaining nothing from calling me a moron because i beleive your male buddy and idol is an overrated rappr.Yaok i got relapse particularly for that reason so you couldn’t say shit 2 me when i call em overated, to be honest relapse is an average album at best, although its better than his last two albums, if relapse was released in 1996 it wouldn’t get no attention, is just the bad state rap is in, makes em seem like a saviour and a great rapper compared to lil wayne. Please do me a favour go and buy albums from pharoah monch, rass kass(soul on ice) all common albums apart from (can i borrow a dollar), big puns shit, mos def first two albums, then compare, em ain’t far off them, and in terms of content and subject matter theyre all better.

  • gogo

1 quesion why is eminem better than common, rass kass or pharoah monch, honestly… te majoprtiy of eminem fans are either white and prejudiced or haven’t listened to anything outside 50 cent(g-unit),d12 and anything associated to his name, which is why they believe him to be top 5

  • j.ezy

Why is Eminem considered better than Rass kass, common, pharoah monch, mos def,?

  • j.ezy

The majority of eminem fans are either whhite and prejudiced or haven’t listened to any rap outside eminem, 50 cent, g0uint and d12 which is why they think him to be the best, to be honest compare him to those artists and you got a G.O.A.T, but thats the problem compare him to rakim, nas, biggie, pac, ice cube, scarface, Jay-z and even common and and he pares in comparison incidently all those rappers have released a classic album that has alluded eminem in his career

I’m just sittin here laughin at people sayin Em’s flow/delivery is wack. Just cuz you can’t nod your head to it and keep up with it don’t mean it’s not on beat. To Whom It May Concern: Even entertaining the thought of Eminem being the best rapper may have a little to do with the mentality of most black people in the world. We are hung up with the myth that the white man (euro) has been, is, and will always be OUR saviour (anybody heard of Jesus?). Or authority figures(slavemaster, police, government). Biggie said “you’re nobody till somebody kills you”. Look at the way we revere Pac, Biggie, then Pun and on a somewhat smaller scale, Big L & JMJ. Yes, corporations (entertainment dictators) pump our heads up with b.s. to make us feel like we missin out if we not up on this or that. You ever been in Best Buy on his release date? Bananas! And although he has poured out his life stories on wax and doesn’t mention rims and jewelry, he isn’t the best thing 2 happen 2 rap. At all. And yes, I do see black & white in rap (I don’t call it hip-hop) but the main color is green to the execs. So for that matter, we can’t blame Eminem. He’s just a mind control tool aimed at teens and young adults.

  • em at numba 1 racist?!

woooooooooow so i guess em being number 1 would be classified as racist… uhh WHY? sorry hes more lyrical then 95% of every black artist in the game.. tell them to quit rappin that dope shit and oo i get got have will do anything for MONEY shit… yall way to into material things.. get over urself yall aint shit EM u derserve the crown b!!

Jay Z said it best “Rap mags try and use my black ass So advertisers can give ‘em more cash for ads” XXL need to sell mags so they definitely D-Ridin on Em cause at the end of the day it ain’t about Hip Hop its about payin them bills. I keep postin/ droppin knowledge but don’t see the comments. Censorship can be a MF.

Too bad… One thing I know for sure though is when I’m 65 I’ll still be listenin to Hip Hop but most of yall won’t you’ll have moved back to your rock n roll or the latest whatever music. Let that marinate!

  • tru predator

millions of rap fans, and many respected rappers cant be wrong.ill go with the majority on this one.since all the dumbasses sayin he is overhyped OVERLOOK the fact that not only does he sell like hotcakes many rappers think he is a lyrical genius.people who argue against it obviously just feel the need to go against the grain.

  • Da Business

Ok, after reading the article and some of the comments i felt the need to comment. As some1 mention earlier, the whole G.O.A.T. argument is pointless it’s all based on the individuals perceptive. Which IMO i’d say Pac is the GOAT and 3000 bein’ the best MC living.

The point of my post is @ the end of the day Shady is 1 of the greatest EMCEES to ever touch the mic. Though, you may or may not like his music, you can’t deny his influence on the game. Yes, i do believe that his race plays a part in his success but if he wasn’t DOPE we as fans would have kick him to the curve a LONG time ago.

  • j.ezy

tru predator many rappers think lil waynes a lyrcial genius as do many fans, people have said pharoah monch is a lyrical genius(which he is) so why is he not ranked as high as eminem/

    • tru predator

because no matter what people think about eminem.whether they like him or not he keeps people interested.they wanna hear what he has to say.because he is so unpredictable at times.he controls the media.even if you dont like him your always curious about what he may say.thats why he is so smart.he keeps people on their toes.

  • http://www.myspace.com/Lyrik07 L-Y, NawfWestSide

Em iz mad dope, and in my younger yearz he wuz my top emcee. In my current more progressive yearz, I’ve slightly drifted away from Shock Rap. I bought Relapse cuz i dig Em’s muzik, and alwayz will, but just based on the few songz i listened to, it can’t hold a candle to Nas’s last album “Nigger”. I felt where Nas wuz comin’ from to the fullest, not only cuz i could relate, but he was presenting my ppL (black folk) with KnowLedge that they may not have had previousLy. Em’s album (so far) is far away from whut alot of brothers and sisters in the hood (where hip-hop wuz birthed), are experiencing. At best, He could only “touch” on the black struggle, and thats because of where he’s from, his close associates and circle. Don’t think 4 a second that i’m tryin’ to dog my manz, cuz i’m not, but i live in the struggle 4 DoLo chec to chec, thank God, i’m not bloc to bloc, doing illegal shyt (i’ve been there too). And b4 one of ya’LL fuccerz start talkin’ bout a time and place 4 everything, i will say ur right, but more times than not i wanna hear “Close to my reality muzik”. Hip-Hop iz a major part of our culture, and yes it represents diversity, but to me more importantly it represents the Black Struggle in America. Em is definitely apart of Hip-Hop History, but G.O.A.T., No. Personally i would give it to Nas, and he conquers all categories, SouL Power – one-hunneRd – L-Y, NawfWestSide – Screwston, Tejas – http://www.YouTube.com/4ThaLuvTube -

  • j.ezy

L-Y, NawfWestSide agreed, em hasn’t done anything spectacular, ad its ironic how a rapper who has not drop any classic albums can be considered the best. When he drops anything close to illmatic ill give him a shot.

    • tru predator

classic is all in the eye of the beholder.you may not feel he has released a classic album(which in my eyes and many others he has released three).the same can be said about nas.i dont relate to him.he great but i couldnt ever get into his music or jay -z enough to say i think in my mind they have classical albums.its all opinion.there is no right or wrong answer.its what you feel is right and how the music inspires you or touches you determines who you think is the best and the goat.music is all about the fans interpretation.thats the beauty of it.

    • illmatic

so you don’t think the marshall mathers lp is a classic? I don’t know what your definition of a classic is, but that album will never die to me…. you do know it was the best selling solo rap album of all time right? dude left for almost 6 years and was still voted the best rapper alive… try and argue that he isn’t classic… and you don’t think he has done anything spectacular? him just making it in the rap game is spectacular… not to mention all of the controversy he has caused… and reinventing freedom of speech…

  • DA PROOF

you relapse haters must be skimming through the songs cuz although it aint his best shit it is fucken great lyrically and complexly sick wit it

if your talking shit about it you really havent been paying attention to shit

and for those who say he only raps off his beats your fucken retarded a perfect example to prove you wrong would be underground from the relapse

i just hate that people depict on his career so much just give him his due respect and drop it if he was black he probably wouldnt even have so much controversy

only when he’s gone will people give him the respect he deserves

like he says in “careful what you wish for”

    “there was no inbetween
you either loved it or hate it,
every cd critics gave it the 3,
then 3 years later they go back and re-rate it
and called the slim shady LP the greatest,
the marshall mathers was a classic,
    the eminem show was fantastic
but encore just didn’t have the calibre to match it,
I guess enough time just ain’t passed yet
a couple of more years that shit’ll be ILLMATIC”

  • Skeezy

Em aint shit!!! He did what he did, but i wouldn’t call it rap. It’s pop shit packaged as rap. He can rhyme but so can Dr. Seuss, he ain’t gangsta!

  • L-Dub

Nas is the G.O.A.T or Rakim! Em is in top 10 tho

  • Brooklyn ‘Lo

Never been an Eminem fan; I can count on one hand the number of his songs that I actually like. I’ve just never liked emo-rap. “Cleaning Out My Closet”, “Stan”, “Lose Yourself” etc. are all good songs for the most part but, they just don’t appeal to me. Eminem for all intents and purposes is the flipside of the white boy-band phenomenon. Was New Kids on the Block better than New Edition? Is Justin Timberlake better than Usher? If it’s all determined by record sales then he might be the best followed closely by Tupac (another emo-rapper). If it’s based on the number of people that have access to the music and the money to support the music and artist (buying downloads, cd’s and tickets to shows); then Eminem’s audience is both more affluent and loyal making him the best living rapper. If it’s based on the number of emotionally damaged people who identify with him (the drug abuse, baby mama drama, mother hating, run ins with the police, Proof’s death (R.I.P.) etc.) then he has DMX beat by a mile or eight pun intended. His flow is an amalgam of several popular and not so popular rappers/emcees; Masta Ace (delivery), Pharoah Monch (lyrical dexterity), Tupac (that emo-rap thing again), finally throw in some Chino XL (the sarcastic name dropping similes). Combine all those aspects and you have THE most popular rapper of all time; Eminem. To the uninitiated ear it sounds like the best thing since the invention of the sandwich. To the trained ear it sounds too contrived, studied, practiced and un-natural. Some people like it that way; if the record sales are any evidence ALOT of people like it that way. In the end hip-hop is based on talent while rap on the other hand is just a popularity contest. Jay-Z vs. Nas, Ja Rule vs Fifty Cent, Canibus vs. LL Cool J, etc. The more people that buy record the more people are familiar with your work. The more familiar people become with your work the more people that have an opinion on your work. The more people that have an opinion on your work the more popular you are. Hence the term popular opinion. For example if “Rapper A” sells ten million copies and “Rapper B” sells nine million copies that’s a difference of one million people that can actually have an opinion on “Rapper A” while being totally unfamiliar with “Rapper B’s” body of work. That the additional one million people might be white is another factor altogether. That having been said if popularity makes you the greatest rapper of all time then, and only then, Eminem is greatest rapper of all time

    • Jamal7Mile

      What’s up, Brooklyn ‘Lo?

You have made quite a few good point (more than a few *whew*). Let me sleep on this one. But you know I love Em and I was a fan of his (kind of) way before he got an Aftermath record deal in 98-99. Skin color had nothing to do with my admiration of Em. I swear it didn’t.

What is your definition of “Emo-rapper”? Me, personally, I look at an emcee and I say “OK he/she can spit or he/she can’t”.

Let me conclude this one. I agree and disagree with some of the points you’ve made (mostly, I agree) and I need clarification on some of your other points.

      Respectfully yours,
      J7

Delivery and flow… M don’t got it, punchlines yeah, humor yeah, public support yeah. Just because he’s one of the 1st big time white rappers… doesn’t mean he’s one of the best rappers of all time. People get carried away in all da HYPE. He’s great, don’t get me wrong… but he don’t compare with ALOT of other rappers out there.

  • oskamadison

There’s no possible way you can nome one greatest MC of all time. Too many MC’s, too many categories, too many different criterias. As far as white MC’s go, The Beastie Boys opened the door and 3rd Bass brought the credibility which laid the groundwork for Em to have the sales of the former and the respect of the latter. Personally, the first time I heard Em was “My Name Is” and back in the day, I was a black-belt backpacker so I don’t know how I missed him in his pre-Dre era. Anyway, when I heard “My Mame Is”, he had my respect. As technically gifted an MC that he is, though, there was always one intangible thing missing: soul, something that the criminally overlooked Bubba Sparxxx has to spare.

  • BobbyGringo13

It’s fun to debate, but you can never decide a G.O.A.T. In my opion, Andre 3000 is the best ever, hands down. But I understand the argument for say, Jay, over Andre. Andre shared albums wit Big Boi, and they only put out albums ever 5 yrs or so. While Jay consistently puts out hot shit e’ry year. I think if you take Andre’s best and put him up against Jay, Andre’s got it. But you have to look at so many factors. Not to mention accounting for taste. There are underground backpack types that are hella nice, but alot of folks aint feelin it.

  • BobbyGringo13

By the way, e’rybody hatin on Relapse needs to listen again. I been saying Em fell off since The Eminem Show, but he is back wit a vengence. But dead all that G.O.A.T. talk for Em. He was in the running wit his first couple albums, but he fell off hard in my opinion. I can see a top ten tho.

    Why hasnt anyone mentioned Everlast.Eminem
was on his dick so hard he had to make like three songs dissing him.House of Pain was in
the soul assasins which I believe your first
hip hop click with Cypress Hill and Funkdoobiest. Everlast has spit with many high
profile rappers and still doin work today-He
has been in the game since 1989. Lets see if
Eminem is still relevant 20 years later.
