Meryl came from a design in Policenaut. Kojima reused the original Meryl's name and likeness for the Metal Gear version since she was his favorite character in Policenaut. Meryl was a apart of the Next Generation Special Forces recruit and was young and inexperienced. She then went onto to be Solid Snakes side kick and a love intrest on the battlefield.
Meryl first came about as Roy Campbells dead brothers daughter, she was really Roys daught which came from an affair between Roy and his sister in law, however Meryl did not know this.
After being trained by the army she was recruited by the Next-Generation Special Forces US military group and assigned to Shadow Moses island in 2005. During this time the existing members of FOXHOUND and the next generation army formed a rebellion and took over the island. Refusing to join in on the rebellion she was thrown in jail on the island along with a few other soldiers (Kenneth Baker). Baker gave Meryl a PAL card which she hid down her top, being forced out of retirment, Solid Snake then broke into the facility and threw the vents made his way in the cell next to Meryls. After the tropp patrolling the cell heard the nosie's coming from the cell next to Meryls, Johnny Sasaki who was the troop opened the wrong cell and gave Meryl a chance to escape and take Johnny Sasaki out. She then stole his uniform and proceded undercover.
After the Shadow Moses incident was over, viewers saw Snake and Meryl riding off together, we then don't know what happened to Meryl as she wasn't in Metal Gear Solid 2, but Snake was carrying her dog tag.
In In the Darkness of Shadow Moses, a book about the story of the Shadow Moses incident, we learn that Snake and Meryl had grew apart.
But now she is back in Guns of the Patriots
