THREATS ISSUED AT LATINO LEADERS
By Peter Nicholas and Duke Helfand

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Monday that prominent public officials of Mexican heritage, including Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, have recently received racially motivated death threats.

At a news conference in the Capitol, Schwarzenegger said he had asked district attorneys throughout the state to take extra precautions against hate-based crimes.

Villaraigosa and Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante have both "received disturbing and hateful death threats," the governor said.

The governor's advisors had heard about the threats from a Sacramento news report. They told the governor, who decided to make a public statement.

Schwarzenegger also cited a Mexican restaurant in the San Diego area that authorities said was the target earlier this month of hate-based arson.

"This is not what California stands for. The greatness of California is its rich diversity. Hate, racism and intolerance are never accepted in our public debates," said Schwarzenegger, who made a statement about the threats at an event in which he announced the appointment of a crime victims advocate.

Villaraigosa told KCAL-TV Channel 9 news late Monday that he had received threats but did not offer details. He said he had not increased his security, adding: "I'm not concerned about that."

He has acknowledged receiving death threats in the past, both in public office and a candidate for mayor.

A spokesman for Bustamante said that three weeks ago, the lieutenant governor received a postcard containing offensive remarks and threats. The card bore a Pasadena postmark.

Bustamante spokesman Stephen Green said the lieutenant governor gets three or four such letters a year. The most recent postcard won't "alter his life at all," Green said.

Bustamante is a Democratic candidate for state insurance commissioner.

Schwarzenegger's communications director, Adam Mendelsohn, said the governor "learned about these threats that have been sent to the Latino elected officials and he felt it important as governor that he come out and denounce these activities."

this lady told my momz about this movie called "Life Without A Mexican" maybe they nned to peep that movie out..But really go into any stabled business these days in California at least.. you will see latinos have did they part for this piece of shit country as well..

the hatred on any racial group is so damn dumb to me anyway. but hearing employers in the past say they were gonna hire someone because they(mexican)work hard for cheap is fucked up.

it is obvious the only reason they making a big deal over latinos now is they wised up. they got tired of getting shitty pay after getting tons of responsibilties at work places.

if they stayed quiet about it i bet this whole issue that been goin on would have never hit surface. legal or not legal citizens don't mean shit far as how they treated. they are human, they work for what they've earned, and LOOK AROUND THIS COUNTRY IS NONE OF OURS REALLY..

should the indians send us all back?

Its called " A Day Without a Mexican" and came out I think a couple of years ago, but has come back into the spotlight because of the immigration protests. Latinos have been quiet way too long, which is why we are referred to as "the sleeping giant." If we all start speaking up and voting, the power of our united voice would be emmense wink.gif

Thats what I'm sayin!!! But what these gringos really need to relize is that the people of this nation that truly believe in democracy must be students of history as well and understand that the indigenous right to life supersedes corporate profit and the agenda of either America or Mexico's government. Both of which working under the guise of a democratic base conceive a methodology to keep their citizens at war while their capitalist foundation grows more totalitarian and corrupted by the passing day. This country has many topics immigration being one of them as a beautiful distraction.
