The Irish are upset over a new Ben & Jerry's flavor called "Black & Tan." Of course, Ben & Jerry's named it after the drink, the Black & Tan, which is a mix of the two most famous Irish beers- half Guiness and half Harp. For the ice cream, Ben & Jerry's mixed the flavor of a non-alcoholic cream stout with chocolate. But what they didn't know was that the original Black and Tans were a British militia that slaughtered the Irish, and were known for their brutality, during Ireland's War of Independence.
It's now costing the US Mint more than one cent to produce a penny. Pennies are made of mostly zinc, with a copper coating. Right now, the cost of those metals is 0.8 cents per penny and with labor, machinery and distribution, that adds another 0.6 cents to the cost, bringing the total cost to 1.4 cents per penny.
