Somebody said that they consider Mexicans different from all other Hispanic people, but when most outsiders use these words interchangeablely. Why are Mexicans not considered Hispanic?


Also, why is Latin America called that? Latin was the language of the Romans. That always baffled me?

@ Frosty - I feel your pain, but I am not sure. The word Hispanic means "of Spain". So if you are not from Spain, wouldn't it be just as bad as Mexican? It may be better to just call the people by where they are from or if you dont know, just say brown people (is that considered negative)

I come to this conclusion because that is what people do for black people.
Why call us African American when some black people come from Europe? If you say because all black people originated in Africa, I would counter by saying that all people originated in Africa, so are we all African Americans? To avoid confusion, people just call us black people (and of course this is not considered negative).

The spanish language is a hybrid of many different languages, one of them is Latin, but to call that whole region latin america is a stretch, because ROME was decimated around 1300, the muslims took that over(the ottoman empire, etc). Spain started conquering the new world in 1492, the romans didn't conquer the new world, they didnt even exist for that matter by the 1500's.

The reason latin america is latin america is cuz they were made by spain and because spain spoke spanish (spanish being a romance language meaning it was derived from latin that the romans spoke) And the region was known as america the west calld it Latin America.

Spain speaks the closest language to the ancient Romans since that area was settled by the visigoths given to them by romans, In the times of Colonialism spainish and latin were interchangable,
