Today, Converse, announced its latest interpretation of the premium Chuck ’70 by channeling the psychedelic creativity of the seventies through the ancient art of Japanese marbling. The Converse Chuck Taylor All Star ’70 Suminagashi sneaker represents the re-purposing of artisan skills through contemporary product design and graphic styling.

Originating in China over 2,000 years ago and advanced by Japanese Shinto priests as early as the 12th century, Suminagashi is a creative marbling technique that involves suspending inks or paints in a liquid water surface to produce stunning patterns. A skilled craftsman could control the floating pigments through the viscosity and surface tension of the water to create images that evoked landscapes, clouds, vast seas or mountain ranges – with vibrant colors interlacing and layering together harmoniously.

Released in two confident colorways, the swirling black, white and red canvas uppers are adorned with tinted rubberized polka-dots, adding a modern twist to a classic art form. Aged-gloss midsoles and toecaps balance well with black contrast stitching and linings, while the polka dot outsoles add to the visual juxtaposition and playfulness of the designs.

Converse First String is a limited-edition collection that celebrates craftsmanship, authenticity and collaboration at the highest level. The Converse All Star Chuck ’70 Suminagashi sneaker will be released in limited quantities, beginning on Friday, July 1, 2016 at Converse stores, online at Converse.com and at select First String retailers worldwide.
