De La Soul is one of the most consistent, creative and underappreciated groups in Hip-Hop ever. Stakes Is High said something that needed to be said then and, unfortunately, needs to be said even more now. The funny thing is, at least back then there was balance in the game. East coast, west coast, mainstream, underground, it didn’t matter. As long as your label was on its job (remember those “street teams”?) and your music was halway decent, you had a chance to eat. Now, the music has been watered down beyond recognition and all labels see is the bottom line.
