It's fun to debate, but you can never decide a G.O.A.T. In my opion, Andre 3000 is the best ever, hands down. But I understand the argument for say, Jay, over Andre. Andre shared albums wit Big Boi, and they only put out albums ever 5 yrs or so. While Jay consistently puts out hot shit e'ry year. I think if you take Andre's best and put him up against Jay, Andre's got it. But you have to look at so many factors. Not to mention accounting for taste. There are underground backpack types that are hella nice, but alot of folks aint feelin it.

There's no possible way you can nome one greatest MC of all time. Too many MC's, too many categories, too many different criterias. As far as white MC's go, The Beastie Boys opened the door and 3rd Bass brought the credibility which laid the groundwork for Em to have the sales of the former and the respect of the latter. Personally, the first time I heard Em was "My Name Is" and back in the day, I was a black-belt backpacker so I don't know how I missed him in his pre-Dre era. Anyway, when I heard "My Mame Is", he had my respect. As technically gifted an MC that he is, though, there was always one intangible thing missing: soul, something that the criminally overlooked Bubba Sparxxx has to spare.

What's up, Brooklyn 'Lo?

You have made quite a few good point (more than a few *whew*). Let me sleep on this one. But you know I love Em and I was a fan of his (kind of) way before he got an Aftermath record deal in 98-99. Skin color had nothing to do with my admiration of Em. I swear it didn't.

What is your definition of "Emo-rapper"? Me, personally, I look at an emcee and I say "OK he/she can spit or he/she can't".

Let me conclude this one. I agree and disagree with some of the points you've made (mostly, I agree) and I need clarification on some of your other points.

Respectfully yours,
J7

Never been an Eminem fan; I can count on one hand the number of his songs that I actually like. I've just never liked emo-rap. "Cleaning Out My Closet", "Stan", "Lose Yourself" etc. are all good songs for the most part but, they just don't appeal to me. Eminem for all intents and purposes is the flipside of the white boy-band phenomenon. Was New Kids on the Block better than New Edition? Is Justin Timberlake better than Usher? If it's all determined by record sales then he might be the best followed closely by Tupac (another emo-rapper). If it's based on the number of people that have access to the music and the money to support the music and artist (buying downloads, cd's and tickets to shows); then Eminem's audience is both more affluent and loyal making him the best living rapper. If it's based on the number of emotionally damaged people who identify with him (the drug abuse, baby mama drama, mother hating, run ins with the police, Proof's death (R.I.P.) etc.) then he has DMX beat by a mile or eight pun intended. His flow is an amalgam of several popular and not so popular rappers/emcees; Masta Ace (delivery), Pharoah Monch (lyrical dexterity), Tupac (that emo-rap thing again), finally throw in some Chino XL (the sarcastic name dropping similes). Combine all those aspects and you have THE most popular rapper of all time; Eminem. To the uninitiated ear it sounds like the best thing since the invention of the sandwich. To the trained ear it sounds too contrived, studied, practiced and un-natural. Some people like it that way; if the record sales are any evidence ALOT of people like it that way. In the end hip-hop is based on talent while rap on the other hand is just a popularity contest. Jay-Z vs. Nas, Ja Rule vs Fifty Cent, Canibus vs. LL Cool J, etc. The more people that buy record the more people are familiar with your work. The more familiar people become with your work the more people that have an opinion on your work. The more people that have an opinion on your work the more popular you are. Hence the term popular opinion. For example if "Rapper A" sells ten million copies and "Rapper B" sells nine million copies that's a difference of one million people that can actually have an opinion on "Rapper A" while being totally unfamiliar with "Rapper B's" body of work. That the additional one million people might be white is another factor altogether. That having been said if popularity makes you the greatest rapper of all time then, and only then, Eminem is greatest rapper of all time
