Bottomline the no homo saying is a way to divert attention away from the fact that you are homophobic. My thoughts are folks who are homophobes aren't afraid of what gay people will do to them. they are afraid of what they are going to make them do (i.e. bring out there inner homo).
I am straight and I don't care what these folks do as there life style it is there business not mine as long as they don't interfer with me. I won't interfer with them.
Hip-hop is too childish (no lil wayne)to actually tackle a subject like this it reflects the black communities own issue with dealing with the subject and thus pop culture creates hype like DL bros on every corner etc...
It just take knowing who you are and what you want, if you are grounded and true to self nothing can change this. If you are trying to fight the feeling you don't want reminders of your own weakness

Dipset got some homos in it not all of them but they probably got some ish going on they got to keep down for crew sake. The whole pretty boy thug angle is stupid because if you are a pretty boy you can't be a true thug for long cause you got to fight. fo yo set foooooool LOL

Basically, what I'm saying is that the same people perpetuating strong homophobic sentiment in society are the same people perpetuating strong anti-homophobic sentiment. They want to keep us fighting amongst ourselves over stupid shit so we're to preoccupied to notice that they're accumulating all the wealth and power and stripping us of all our rights.

It's going to keep getting worse if we can't rise above this nonsense.

Wow, lots of comments, here's my three cents, even if no one reads it:

1. Homophobia is perpetuated by mainstream culture at least as much as it is by rap music, just more indirectly. I mean, if I didn't happen to know gay people personally and wasn't able to see that they are just as normal as anyone else, I'd think gay men were annoying, overly-groomed, celebrity-obsessed, shopaholic chickenheads with lisps who only care about having "fabulous feng shui" and probably be homophobic. And I'd think gay women were either hot nymphos or butch golfers. Thankfully, I've experienced enough to know that's only true for those who fallen prey to media imagery.

2. I imagine some rappers have strong homophobia for the same reasons some black people do. It's probably the same reason the kid who gets picked on the playground it always the one who picks on the new guy to get picked on the most. It's hard to care about someone else's civil rights when you're still busy fighting for your own.

3. From the way I'm hearing most lyrics, they seem to be using fag, gay, and homo to refer to people who have annoying, overly-groomed, celebrity-obsessed, shopaholic chickenhead with a lisp tendencies (or jock-riding tendencies) rather than people engaging in samesex relations. Kinda like 'nigga' is used like 'dude' and not like the way Sen. George Allen uses it.

The only place I seem to keep hearing about the whole "gay rapper" stuff (besides as a reference to what I just discussed) is corporate media outlets like yours, Tara. You might be distributing disinformation that defaces the music again.

Personally, I wish the whole issue would die (with gays being given equal rights, of course). If we keep letting them distract us with side issues like this, pretty soon none of us will have any rights. I don't even know if we do anymore after The Hitler Act: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/28/opinion/28thu1.html?ex=1317096000&en=3eb3b23c27944ff9&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss.

Excellent article, Tara. You know I know what you're talking about... no homo ;)

Which is the silliest, most immature, most homophobic, and most psychotically hyper-masculine statement that hip hop has spawned maybe in its entire existence.

the amount of gayness that goes down in hip hop is the biggest, darkest secret in the industry. but these grown ass lil ghetto boys in their second childhood can't deal with the facts about Dr. Dre or The Game or Eminem or someone they know and love secretly being a bi-sexual or gay man.

the day will come.
and if it doesn't, the culture will continue to lie to itself and ultimately NOT KEEP IT REAL.

fuck it. those who know the truth already know about this. those who deny and doubt it, are just ignorant souls full of fear and hate, if not just a small mind unwilling to open to the truth.

which is: one of your favorite rappers is a gay Black man doing hip hop. period.

deal with it. and have a nice day! :)
peace Tara
