Hip hop gets no special treatment. People with money want more money and when they see or hear anything that people, black or white, put out with an appeal to the masses it is going to get commerciallized. When hip hop first showed up in a McDonalds commercial (kid’s in a cypher spittin about a double quarter pounder w/cheese) did you take it as an insult or compliment.

I never really thought of it this way but I’m starting to think it’s really funny in a sad way to hear black people trying to claim hip hop for themselves as if it’s their personal property. If it ever belonged to anyone, it certainly wasn’t a majority of black people in America…just the Bronx community or whatever. You can’t have it both ways…you can’t promote your music to Americans en masse and welcome whitey’s money and then get territorial. And it’s not even like it’s exclusively or even mainly white people who buy into the ridiculously lame bullshit being churned out. On the one hand it is widely acknowledged that the majority of people buying the supposedly more “evolved and enlightened” forms of hip hop are white kids, and then at the same time white kids get blamed for making bullshit rap profitable. I don’t see what kind of sense that makes. What are black fans responsible for, then? While I know plenty of black people who have good taste in hip hop, I know plenty more who like absolute bullshit. It’s not just white kids with bad taste.
Danity Kane type stuff isn’t the same as hip hop, so it can’t actually take over the genre. It can just take over the market. It’s like saying that the future of heavy metal is hard rock. When one genre similar to another gains more popularity, it doesn’t destroy the original genre, just makes it less popular for a while. Maybe hip hop would benefit from some soul searching, maybe it will have a positive effect on the genre by making it go back to the drawing board.
Danity Kane is way less obnoxious and annoying than lil jon and shit, is it a bad thing if pop music knocks rappers off the charts for a few years? What mainstream rappers out there are really worth listening to in the first place right now? I would take pop over the current incarnation of rap anyday, and I hate both.

Maybe rap albums would sell if there wasn’t a bunch of transparent, meaningless bullshit getting pumped out of the South. It makes me sick. I suppose the South isn’t entirely to blame. We have Crunk’s younger, gayer cousin Hyphy here in the West.

A casual listener might flip to BET or MTV and see a bunch of retards dancing aroud cars they can’t afford filled with big-assed whores chanting “booty booty booty booty rocking everywhere”, mistake it for being representative of the entire genre, and quickly dismiss quality rap albums (which now are few and far between)as the same brand of worthless trash.

Rap albums sell like they have AIDS on them because corporate America, like always, has bent hip hop over and dry-fucked it in its pursuit of “cool.” Talentless shitbags and career criminals are hired and recklessly mistaken for talented musicians. Thank God for Nas, Game, and Jay; they can’t drop soon enough in my eyes.
