@Martin – I very much see eye to eye with what you are saying here although one has to take into account all aspects of the argument. We can all be a bit responsible of adopting a rather narrow-minded view to these issues and for the most part, stepping back and observing the ‘bigger picture’ can almost always create helpful results.

Ok, first off. The roots album is awsome and 10x better live if you geeks could afford a show! “or a cd for that matter” I BUY CDS! I may be alone here and do agree that I feel ripped when I buy a shitty album. I do love all hip hop in all its forms. I do not like where rap is going now with this retarded ass Gold chain music as i like to call it. I have been checking out Swollen Members and there album drops on the 12th of september and it is dope! “speaking of Ghostface”. Therefore, i really don’t give a fuck about record sales & as long as they keep makin music i like 2 listen 2, i still won’t give a fuck about record sales. You are smokin that kush if you think for one second that a) Fab is actually going to sell b) Nas is ever going to see the light of day in 2006 c) that Jay-Z’s new album hasn’t ALREADY been promoted more than damn near every Def Jam release since Late Registration and it doesn’t even have a title yet!!!

Get past the fact that Jay-Z is probably your favorite rapper. Look at the man’s track record as an executive at the home of hip-hop. To take it further, look at what he has done for Lupe Fiasco’s album: NOTHING! Lupe could have easily been the star of 2006 (cult following, nice single, classic mixtapes, no cursing). Lupe should be a media darling and Jay-Z is the album’s executive producer! When the hell is it going to drop?!

I love Jay-Z as a rapper. He is the G.O.A.T (due to consistency, album sells, the fact that Pac & B.I.G. died, his impact on the culture, etc.) but give me a break!

If Jay-Z is the Mike Jordan of rap, then being President of Def Jam is like going to play baseball for two years. Yes it was his dream, but he’s so much better at rapping!
