Hip hop is doing just fine I think. It was never about popularity or success. It's about the people, expression, and originality. It doesn't matter if the most famous rappers aren't lyrical enough or creative. They're businessmen rapping for cash, not for the culture, so if they're getting stale fuck it- that's their problem. Plenty of rappers today are still creative and original, they're just not in the spotlight.

Hip Hop had its proverbial brains blown clean out toward the end of '96 when somebody took out the most prolific & thought provoking artist of the genre, Tupac, and then took out Big.
Producers once created deep, complex beats with analog sound which gave it a rich feel, now they make pop beats for kids in digital (but plastic) format. Mid-90s was the apex of its creativity, and it's just declined into freefall from then on...

i used to be a hip hop juinkie. for me the mid to late 90's was my golden age. i remember being the first kid on my block to have the newest beats out there. at the time i lived in a white neighborhood in the burbs so everyone was like "whats rap?". i used to record music videos on muchmusic's "rap city" and "Da mix" in order to discover the lesser known artists. i would spend a crapload of my weekly allowences just on imported cds that sold for double the price. It was sooo worth it back then.
fast forward to 2000 and now downloading took all the fun out of buying cds. why spend $29.99 on an imported cd when you can download it for free? Mainstream overklill also killed my addiction for hip hop music. nowadays everything sounds un-original. the southern influnce left a bitter taste in my mouth. it sounds good at first, but its disposable. when aaliyah died, the music died for me as well.

i have a new love. Electronic/trance/house or whatever you want to call it. theres a LOT and i mean a LOT of crap out there, but every now and then theres a diamond worth discovering. i used to hate electronic music but now its my savior. i dont think i can go back. Electronic music re kindled my flame for music.

Rap is DEAD, and thank god.Its time now to pave the way for something NEW like all the Techno genres that have been all but ignored by the mainstream. Rap is for people who dont really even like music that much, they just like all the flashy crap that is shoved into these disgusting videos. I would also wonder if Rap isnt somehow responsable for the decline in the IQ of the average american over the last decade.

If New York can put the blame on themselves, If Cali can put the blame on themselves, The south should take some responsibitlity for Hip Hop's suffering. Y'll not that good seriously. I mean I fuck with some of ya'll shit, but let's be real. You can't say that the south has nothing to do with hip hop's dry state. I mean ya'll saw ya'll in the muthafuckin limelight right? If ya'll in the limelight, shouldn't ya'll be takin some of the heat. Seriously think about this. I aint sayin hip hop is dead. Rap music is dead, but hop aint neva gonna die. I like what Nas is doin and the album is fire. Songs like Hip Hop is Dead, Can't Forget About You, Hustlers, Still Dreamin and Play On Playa arer among my favorites. Those songs speak truth. Aand before you say that I'm hatin on the south, keep in mind, I live right here in the A. Atlanta GA. The so called hip hop mecca. I mean we do what we do, but we can't say we runnin anything. Who we runnin wit. Field Mob?, Bubbasparx, Young Joc?, Young Dro. No my A town people. We just tryin to make music. Aint no one make hip hop music better than New York. Damn striaght I said it. I wish I could move up there man. Real talk. I was just up there the other day and shit is bananas over there. Hip Hop aint dead at all up there. Its more like on break. The excitment is comin back and New York gon take the crown once again. And I will be right there when they do. I aint dissin my city, but damn we some bitchesdown here. We talk about how the East has too many beefs. Niggas and bitches, We got plenty down here too. They just more hidden. People get shot more down here than up there anyway, so that's out of the equation. Besides Ludacris, TI and Outkast, aint nobody really go platinum down here. Up there they got Jigga, Diddy and Nas just to name a few. And even the shit that don't go platinum are still classics. Don't hat on East just cuz they the east. I want them back and I can't wait for they asses to come back to feed me some real shit. By the way 50 cents albums are very highly rated. he aint what mothalovas make him out to be.
