I am from the Bay and minus the Gay hippies part I agree with is review about hyphy. However, I don’t feel he is qualified to speak on the Bay area music secene if he had took the time to do some real journalism he would of found out that alot of people here (Bay Area) don’t even like the hyphy music. The kids like it but nobody over 25 even listen to or supports it.

Hyphy is not new it’s been arround for almost 4yrs now so it can be considered a fail because artist with major label deals ( E-40, Too Short, F.A.B ) have not been able to get any mainstream success with it (partly the labels fault, no promotion no sales).

Who ever wrote this article is OBVIOUSLY a complete fag who knows nothing about the bay and probably dreams of sucking Nas’ dick… The bay has been like this for years, I know because I have lived here my entire life. Mac Dre has always been Mac Dre, an amazing and original MC. E-40 has always been E-40, another amazing and original MC. However, during the course of the last four years or so, Mac Dre’s wild, flamboyant, party like a rock star style has become popularized throughout the bay. We became less worried about grinding and beefing, and more concerned with feeling and expressing ourselves. We started “thizzing” while our cannabis clubs supplied us with an endless amount of “purp”. We started “gigging” at our sideshows and “ghost riding” our whips. E-40, who refused to work with Mac Dre throughout the majority of their careers, took note of this trend and realized that this was the direction in which the bay was heading. You see, E-40 and Mac Dre were both from Vallejo and competed for popularity and record sales. E-40 signed to Jive and was played on the radio while Mac Dre stayed underground, because as any Mac Dre fan knows, he’s too hard for the fuckin’ radio. Sadly, Mac Dre was gunned down right when his music was finally gaining the notoriety and radio play it deserved. His sometimes wacky, but never watered-down style became increasingly popular throughout the bay as his death was publicized and more people were exposed to his art. This is what turned into and started the “hyphy movement”. Every one adopted the Mac Dre lifestyle and began wearing the “stunna shades”, began “popping thizzles”, as well as “gigging” and “going dumb”. E-40, the most powerful rapper in the bay, named this trend “the hyphy movement” and used it as a gimmick to thrust the bay back into it’s much-deserved spotlight (not to mention put a lot of money in his pocket). My point is that you can’t cast aside the hyphy movement as a failed gimmick, because this is actually what the bay is really like, and will continue to be whether or not you see it on MTV2. E-40 just decided to go mainstream with our lifestyle in an attempt to see the region he calls home make money like the rest of the country. It sickens me to know that completely unoriginal rappers from New York will continue to dominate the rap game from years to come… FUCK XXL. GET SOME NEW WRITERS WHO ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. ONE OF THESE DAYS YOU MIGHT OFFEND THE WRONG PEOPLE WITH YOUR BLATANT IGNORANCE.
