Bodega Bamz Asserts His Lyrical Mastery on “My Flex (Freestyle)”

Bodega Bamz isn't holding back in 2018. After releasing his lauded P.A.P.I. album last month, today (May 18), the Harlem spitter delivers a new freestyle called "My Flex (Freestyle)," which finds him aptly flexing over Fat Joe's Just Blaze-produced track "Safe 2 Say."

The "Clout" MC raps about a slew of different topics for the freestyle, but he also makes sure to boast his elite lyrical abilities, which include solid metaphors and nostalgic references.

"You tryna find a way, make the wrong turn/When my homie got shot he said he like the burn," Bamz rhymes. "Hardcore, nothing like Lil' Kim/You could never pull my card without the pen/So shook, you could tell how his hand shake/Shit, you could tell by a handshake."

In the video accompanying the freestyle, Bamz hangs out in an intimate studio setting with his brother Ohla. The rhymer can be seen putting the finishing touches on the track, recording the polished product. While black and white footage shows him performing the song for his team, a small clip in the upper right corner features him during the recording process as he spits into the microphone.

Bamz's new freestyle holds significance, as he told XXL that he heard Funkmaster Flex say that he needs to "get hotter" before he comes back to spit a new freestyle on Flex's Hot 97 radio show. Bamz even expresses some frustration with seeing lesser known artists get an opportunity to spit on the platform.

"I was saving this for Flex, but he told Dru Ha I gotta get hotter," he shares, referring to Drew "Dru Ha" Friedman, the co-founder of Duck Down Music Dru, which is the label Bamz releases his music on. "In the meantime, I keep seeing people the streets never heard of up there [Kanye shrug]."

The rapper-turned-actor also revealed what he's got coming up for his fans this year, which includes being part of the second season of the SMILF television show—he already secured his spot on the first season—and a collaboration with Reebok. He also just released his P.A.P.I. album in April and there's more in store.

"My new album PAPI is out now on all streaming sites so go get that," he states. "SMILF Season 2 on Showtime. We start shooting this summer! And shout out to the good people at Reebok. We doing something special this summer as well!"
