Kendrick Lamar might arguably be one of the biggest hip-hop superstars in the world right now, but there was a time he almost missed his big chance in the music community. The Compton rapper sits down for an interview with Howard Stern on SiriusXM channel Howard 100, where he discusses many topics, including the first phone call he had with Dr. Dre, which helped catapult his career.

K. Dot recalls being on tour with Tech N9ne and his TDE brother, Jay Rock, as a hypeman, when he got a call while dining at the restaurant Chili's. The call came from someone claiming to be affiliated with the super producer. Kendrick didn't believe that the phone call was legit, so the West Coast MC says he hung up and almost blew his chance.

"Me and my boy Ali, we was eating at Chili's. I'll never forget it," he states. "We was eating at Chili's and we got a call like, 'Yo, Dr. Dre likes your music.' And we were like, 'Yo, who the fuck is this on the phone?' [laughs]. We hung up...We might have blown it. Another call came in from somebody else. Then another call came in from somebody else like, 'Yo, they trying to reach out and figure out who you with.'"

Fortunately, Dre's people continued to reach out to Kendrick, and eventually, landed a studio session with The Chronic producer shortly after. The rest is history from there.

Also during his conversation with Stern, Kendrick recalls nearly getting Prince to jump on his "Complexion (A Zulu Love)" record, off his To Pimp a Butterfly album from 2015. The rapper, who's Grammy-nominated for 2018, tells the story of going to Prince's estate and meeting with the late idol. Prince convinced the rapper to go onstage with him at his show that evening. Kendrick says he was so blindsided and blown away by the opportunity to be onstage with Prince that he forgot all about getting him on the track.
