For a young MC, Joey Bada$$ has a strong grip on hip-hop history. From his first mixtape, 1999, the Brooklyn rapper channeled the 1990s-era boom bap sound of classic New York hip-hop and his debut album, January's B4.Da.$$, incorporated production from the likes of DJ Premier and J Dilla, among others. And that type of approach lends itself well to a Roots-esque acceptance of live instrumentation, which has manifested itself with multiple collaborations with iconic New Orleans jazz funk outfit the Soul Rebels Brass Band.

Joey's relationship with Soul Rebels dates back more than a year, when he hopped on stage to perform with the group as a guest at their show at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City last August alongside the likes of Mobb Deep's Prodigy and Brooklyn MC Jean Grae. That experience led to another performance together in New Orleans last October, which in turn wound up with the artists working together on B4.Da.$$. Joey sampled the Soul Rebels on his track "O.C.B." off the album, with the band given a co-production credit for the song.

With one collaboration under their belt, Joey Bada$$ and Soul Rebels Brass Band will be bringing their onstage chemistry back for two shows in New Orleans at the end of October, at the House of Blues on Oct. 29 and Voodoo Festival on Oct. 30. In anticipation for the shows—their first full-length performances together—a new mini-doc has emerged with interviews with Joey and the Soul Rebels about their collaborations together, the importance of live instrumentation in hip-hop and jazz and funk as the fathers of the genre. Check the doc out above.
