Universal Music Continues To Target Illegal Mixtapes

Universal Music Group, the largest collection of record labels in the recording industry, filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against BCD Music Group for allegedly distributing illegal mixtapes. According to Billboard.biz, the suite was filed on September 6 at the federal District Court in Los Angeles and claims BCD released unauthorized mixtapes featuring artists such as Ludacris, Nelly, Young Buck, 50 Cent and Timbaland. “BCD has built a significant business by capitalizing on the proliferation of unauthorized mixtapes,” Universal Music Group said in a statement. “Despite our good-faith attempts to address these concerns with BCD, their use of our artists’ music — without permission and with any compensation to rights holders — has required us to file this complaint to protect our rights and those of our artists.” This new lawsuit against the Houston, Texas based BCD Music Group comes after Universal Music introduced a new series of “legal” mixtapes entitled Lethal Squad Mixtapes.
